Ready to take your summer ride out for a spin? Make the most of your riding season with a review of these quick motorcycle and ATV safety tips.

Pay close attention to your surroundings. Make sure you’re not riding in another vehicle’s blind spot, keep your headlights on and watch for loose gravel, potholes and other road hazards.

Helmets save lives. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proved that helmets don’t interfere with a rider’s vision or hearing and are effective in preventing crash fatalities.

Dress the part for safety. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, choose approved protective riding gear to minimize injuries in case of a fall. It’s all you have between you and the road or trail.

Remember that ATVs are off-road vehicles only*. Never ride on paved roads. Stick to designated trails and ride at safe speeds.

You passenger needs to know the rules, too. Make sure they have the right gear and knowledge to ride safely. Tell them where it’s safe to place their hands and feet while riding. Also keep in mind that carrying another person will change how you corner, brake and accelerate.
