John oversees all business and governance standards, ensuring that Co-operators remains aligned with universal co-operative values, and that these values and sustainable practices are effectively incorporated into the organization’s strategy. As liaison for the Board, he works closely with the President and CEO to forward the company’s purpose: building a financially secure future for all Canadians and their communities.
After joining the Board of Directors in 2011, and serving as Chairperson of the Audit Committee in 2013, John was elected Chairperson of the Board in 2014. In addition to remaining an Atlantic region director, he has been re-appointed as Board Chair every year since. Throughout this time, he has been a key decision-maker in many Co-operators initiatives – from overland flood coverage to impact investments – that measurably address social, environmental and financial issues across the country.
John retired as CEO from Co-op Atlantic in 2011. He has served on many industry and associated boards, including the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council board of directors, where he continues to sit. He is also a member of the Governance and Co-operative Identity Committee, and is a past member of the Risk and Compensation Committee.
John holds a B.Sc. in Agriculture from McGill University.
