The keys to preventing car theft

One of the many reasons you have Auto insurance is to cover you if your car is stolen. But, there are a few easy steps you can take to help prevent a theft from happening at all. Your main goal is to make it as difficult as possible for a thief to steal your vehicle and its contents.

• Turn off your ignition and take your keys with you whenever you leave your car. Never leave your car running unattended, even if you think it’s just for a quick stop. Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up at all times.
  
  
• Conceal items left in your car; if you can, keep things in the trunk. Never leave money or valuables in plain view.
  
  
• When you park on a street, you can make it more difficult for a thief to tow your vehicle by turning the wheels toward the curb and using the emergency brake. Parking between other cars also makes yours less of a target for theft.
  
  
• Avoid parking on the street when there are safer locations. Whenever possible, park in a well-lit, well-guarded, highly visible area. If you have a garage, park your car inside and lock the garage door.
  
  
• Install a vehicle tracking device, car alarm or an ignition disabler. There are many different types available depending on your budget and needs. Whatever type you choose, make sure it’s installed properly and that you use it correctly. Depending on where you live in Canada, you may also be eligible for a discount on your Auto premiums.
  
  
• To prevent identity fraud, don’t leave your vehicle ownerships, liability pink slips, credit card invoices or other documents containing personal information in your vehicle. Carry them with you.
  
  
• Consider having your windows and other major car parts marked with your VIN. This makes it more difficult for thieves to sell them.
  
  
• If you use a GPS, don’t program your home address into it. If your car is stolen, they could use it to lead them to your home, and use your garage door opener to access the inside.
  
  
• If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, check IBC’s annual list of most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada to see if your preferred model is at risk.
